PVC or Polyvinyl chloride is the most common plastic used across the world. Every year there is an increase in the demand for PVC which indicates an augmented use of the product. It is versatile and is used for making a number of things including rigid bottles, pipes and fittings, cables, flooring, flex film, rigid film and plates, and coated fabrics. We might not have observed carefully but PVC is all around us. Flexible: In its flexible form, PVC is soft and is used for a producing a number of products such as imitation leather, electric cable insulation, plumbing, signage, inflatable products, etc. For use in this form it is usually combined with plasticizers.

Polyvinyl chloride in its purest form resembles white, brittle solid. It doesn’t dissolve in alcohol but is slightly soluble in tetrahydrofuran.

PVC can be lifesaving as it is used in a number of medical devices, which are life-saving and disposable. Medical tubing done with PVC is very easy to sterilize and doesn’t knot or break.

PVC material is inherently fire resistant. Hence, the wires and cables enveloped with PVC prevent electrical accidents which might put human life in jeopardy. Being sturdy, it is also used in making components of car. It shields the parts so well that there is minimum risk of injury in case a car accident takes place.

PVC is nature friendly. Being a material with low carbon it consumes limited primary energy. It is also easy to recycle products made from PVC. Products made from PVC are sturdy and go through less depreciation even after undergoing wear and tear. They don’t demand high maintenance and repair. For an example, the life of PVC pipes, used for sewage and water supply, is more than a century. It also extends the running life of a car because it shields the underside of vehicles from water and erosion. 

All in all, it can be said that PVC is of great use to mankind. It helps humanity in a number of ways while not demanding much investment. It makes life richer, better, and convenient.
